Vì sao phải rào đón?
Trong văn học thuật, câu khẳng định tuyệt đối (Social media causes depression.) dễ bị phản bác. Rào đón (hedging) là giảm độ chắc chắn cho khớp với bằng chứng: Heavy use of social media may contribute to depression in some teenagers.

Quy tắc dễ sai
- tend, appear, seem + to V, không + V-ing: People tend to spend more online, không viết tend spending.
- Việc đã xảy ra trước lúc nói: to have + V3 (appears to have reduced crime); bị động: to have been + V3.
- It could be argued that là bị động, không viết It could argue that; chủ động thì cần chủ ngữ người: One could argue that…
- arguably đứng trước cụm được đánh giá (arguably the best) hoặc đầu câu có dấu phẩy. to some extent dùng giới từ to, không dùng in.
- be likely to + V nhưng It is likely that + mệnh đề; tương tự It seems / appears that…

tend + to V, không + V-ing.
Sai: The policy seems to reduce crime last year.
Đúng: ✓ The policy seems to have reduced crime last year.
Việc đã xảy ra (last year) → seem + to have + V3.
Sai: It could argue that cities are too crowded.
Đúng: ✓ It could be argued that cities are too crowded.
It không tự lập luận được; dùng bị động It could be argued that.
Sai: In some extent, technology isolates people.
Đúng: ✓ To some extent, technology isolates people.
Cụm cố định là to some extent.
Sai: Prices are likely that they will rise.
Đúng: ✓ Prices are likely to rise.
S + be likely to + V; hoặc It is likely that prices will rise.
