Part 1: Introduction and Interview

Sample Questions and Suggested Answers:

  1. Do you enjoy attending festivals or events in your country?
    • Yes, I do. I find festivals very enjoyable because they are a great opportunity to experience our culture and traditions, and also to spend time with family and friends.
  2. What was the last festival you attended?
    • The last festival I attended was the Mid-Autumn Festival. It’s a popular event in my country where families gather, children play with lanterns, and we eat mooncakes.
  3. Are cultural festivals important in your country?
    • Absolutely. Cultural festivals are a significant part of our heritage and they help to preserve our traditions and bring the community together.
  4. How do people in your country typically celebrate festivals?
    • People usually celebrate festivals by organizing family gatherings, preparing traditional foods, and participating in various cultural activities such as dancing, singing, and playing traditional games.

Part 2: Long Turn

Task:

Describe a cultural festival or event that you have attended or know about. You should say:

  • What the festival or event is
  • When and where it takes place
  • What activities are involved
  • Why it is important to you or to your country

Suggested Answer:

“I would like to talk about the Lunar New Year, also known as Tet, which is celebrated in Vietnam. Tet usually takes place in late January or early February, depending on the lunar calendar. It is the most important and widely celebrated festival in Vietnam.

During Tet, preparations begin well in advance. Families clean their homes to get rid of bad luck, cook special foods like sticky rice cakes (banh chung), and buy new clothes. On the first day of Tet, families gather to pay respect to their ancestors with an altar full of offerings. Children receive lucky money in red envelopes from elders, and there are many traditional games and lion dances to enjoy.

Tet is especially important to me because it is a time for family reunions and reflecting on the past year. It embodies the values of respect for ancestors and hope for a prosperous new year. The festive atmosphere, with its vibrant colors and joyful activities, makes Tet a significant event in Vietnamese culture.”

Part 3: Discussion

Sample Questions and Suggested Answers:

  1. How do cultural festivals benefit society?
    • Cultural festivals benefit society by promoting cultural heritage and unity. They provide an opportunity for people to learn about different traditions and customs, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  2. Do you think the way festivals are celebrated has changed over the years? How?
    • Yes, I think so. Nowadays, festivals are often more commercialized with more emphasis on entertainment and consumerism. However, the core traditions and values are still preserved, although sometimes they might be overshadowed by modern elements.
  3. Are there any festivals or events in your country that attract tourists from other countries?
    • Yes, the Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival are major attractions for tourists. These festivals offer a unique cultural experience with traditional performances, delicious food, and vibrant decorations.
  4. What role do you think the government should play in supporting cultural festivals?
    • The government should play a significant role by providing funding and logistical support to ensure the smooth organization of festivals. They should also promote these festivals internationally to attract more tourists.
  5. Do you think festivals are becoming too commercialized these days? Why or why not?
    • In some ways, yes. Many festivals have become heavily commercialized, with businesses using them as marketing opportunities. While this helps boost the economy, it can sometimes detract from the cultural and traditional aspects of the festivals.
