Mệnh đề quan hệ (Relative Clauses) là một loại mệnh đề phụ thuộc cung cấp thông tin bổ sung về một danh từ trong mệnh đề chính. Chúng bắt đầu bằng một đại từ quan hệ (who, whom, whose, which, hoặc that) hoặc một trạng từ quan hệ (where, when, hoặc why). Mệnh đề quan hệ có thể được sử dụng để thêm thông tin mô tả hoặc xác định vào một câu.

Các Loại Mệnh đề Quan hệ Relative Clauses:

1. Mệnh đề Quan hệ Xác định: Những mệnh đề này cung cấp thông tin cần thiết về danh từ mà chúng sửa đổi. Đại từ và Trạng từ Quan hệ:

• Đại từ Quan hệ: who, whom, whose, which, that
  • Who: Dùng cho con người.
  • Whom: Dùng cho con người, nhưng chủ yếu trong ngữ cảnh trang trọng.
  • Whose: Chỉ sở hữu và được sử dụng cho cả con người và vật.
  • Which: Dùng cho vật và đôi khi cho động vật.
  • That: Dùng cho con người, vật và động vật. Nó ít trang trọng và thường có thể bị bỏ qua trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định.
• Trạng từ Quan hệ: where, when, why
  • Where: Đề cập đến một nơi.
  • When: Đề cập đến một thời gian.

Cách Tạo Mệnh đề Quan hệ:

• Mệnh đề Quan hệ Chủ đề: Đại từ quan hệ làm vai trò chủ đề của mệnh đề quan hệ.
  • Ví dụ: The man who is talking to Mary is her father.
• Mệnh đề Quan hệ Vị ngữ: Đại từ quan hệ làm vị ngữ của mệnh đề quan hệ.
  • Ví dụ: The house which Jack built is very old.

Việc Bỏ Qua Đại từ Quan hệ:

• Trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định, đại từ quan hệ đôi khi có thể bị bỏ qua khi nó là vị ngữ của mệnh đề.
  • Ví dụ: The car (that) she drives is a hybrid.

Mệnh đề Quan hệ với Giới Từ:

• Khi một giới từ cần được đặt trước đại từ quan hệ, nó có thể được đặt ở cuối mệnh đề hoặc được giữ nguyên vị trí ban đầu.
  • Ví dụ: The book that I was talking about is on the table.
  • Ví dụ: The book about which I was talking is on the table.
