  1. Phát âm /s/: Trong nhiều trường hợp, đuôi “s” được phát âm là /s/ khi từ đó là danh từ số ít, dạng động từ thứ ba số ít hoặc tính từ như trong các từ: cats (/kæts/), dogs (/dɒɡz/), walks (/wɔːks/), loves (/lʌvz/), thorns (/θɔːrnz/).
  2. Phát âm /z/: Đôi khi, đuôi “s” được phát âm là /z/ khi từ đó là danh từ số ít, dạng động từ thứ ba số ít hoặc tính từ, và từ trước nó kết thúc bằng âm tiếp theo là /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /θ/, hoặc /ð/. Ví dụ: cats’ (/kæts/), dogs’ (/dɒɡz/), boys’ (/bɔɪz/), wishes (/ˈwɪʃɪz/), reaches (/ˈriːʧɪz/), dances (/ˈdænsɪz/), truths (/truːðz/).
  3. Phát âm /ɪz/: Đuôi “es” được phát âm là /ɪz/ khi từ trước nó kết thúc bằng âm tiếp theo là /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /θ/, hoặc /ð/. Ví dụ: boxes (/ˈbɒksɪz/), buzzes (/ˈbʌzɪz/), washes (/ˈwɒʃɪz/), wishes (/ˈwɪʃɪz/), quizzes (/ˈkwɪzɪz/), judges (/ˈdʒʌdʒɪz/), churches (/ˈtʃɜːʧɪz/).

Phát âm /əz/: Đuôi “es” được phát âm là /əz/ khi từ trước nó kết thúc bằng âm tiếp theo là /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /θ/, hoặc /ð/ và có thêm âm tiết hoặc âm tiết chính kết thúc bằng âm tiết không betôn hóa hoặc /iː/ hoặc /uː/. Ví dụ: passes (/ˈpɑːsɪz/), catches (/ˈkæʧɪz/), watches (/ˈwɒʧɪz/), hitches (/ˈhɪʧɪz/), fizzes (/ˈfɪzɪz/), judges (/ˈdʒʌdʒɪz/), massages (/məˈsɑːʒɪz/).
