Section 1: Conversation between Two Friends Planning a Wildlife Conservation Trip

Narrator: You will hear a conversation between two friends, Lisa and Mark, discussing their plans for a wildlife conservation trip. First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5. (Pause for 30 seconds)

Lisa: Hey Mark, I was looking into different options for our wildlife conservation trip. There are a few interesting places we could go.

Mark: That sounds great, Lisa. Which places are you considering?

Lisa: Well, there’s a project in Kenya focusing on elephant conservation, one in Australia working with koalas, and another in the Amazon rainforest aiming to protect various endangered species.

Mark: Wow, those all sound amazing. I think the Amazon one sounds particularly intriguing. What exactly do they do there?

Lisa: They do a lot of things, but mainly they focus on habitat restoration and anti-poaching efforts. Volunteers get to help with monitoring wildlife and even some reforestation activities.

Mark: That sounds like a lot of hard work but also very rewarding. What about the one in Australia?

Lisa: In Australia, the focus is more on medical care and rehabilitation for injured koalas. It’s a bit different but still very important work.

Mark: Hmm, tough choice. How about the project in Kenya?

Lisa: In Kenya, it’s all about protecting elephants from poachers. Volunteers help with tracking the movements of elephant herds and educating local communities about the importance of conservation.

Mark: I think I’m leaning towards the Amazon project. It seems like there’s a lot of variety in the work we’d be doing.

Lisa: I agree. Plus, we’d get to experience one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Let’s go with the Amazon project then!

Section 2: Lecture on Endangered Species and Conservation Efforts

Narrator: You will hear a lecture on endangered species and conservation efforts. First, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10. (Pause for 30 seconds)

Lecturer: Good morning everyone. Today, we’re going to talk about endangered species and the efforts being made to conserve them.

One of the most well-known endangered species is the tiger. Tigers are primarily threatened by habitat loss and poaching. Conservationists are working to create protected areas where tigers can live and breed safely.

Another critically endangered species is the Javan rhinoceros. There are fewer than 75 individuals left in the wild. The primary threat to these rhinos is habitat destruction due to agricultural expansion. Conservation efforts include habitat restoration and strict anti-poaching laws.

In marine environments, the vaquita, a small porpoise found in the Gulf of California, is on the brink of extinction with less than 30 individuals remaining. The main threat to vaquitas is bycatch from illegal fishing. Conservationists are advocating for the use of safer fishing methods and the establishment of marine protected areas.

Efforts to save these and other species include breeding programs, habitat restoration, and international cooperation. The key to success in these efforts is community involvement and education, which help ensure that local people are engaged in and benefit from conservation activities.
