As cities expand, the trees that once lined their streets are frequently sacrificed for road widening and construction. Some argue that city authorities should make planting and protecting these trees a central priority. I largely agree with this view, although I believe tree policy should be integrated with other urban needs rather than placed above them.

The strongest argument for street trees is their effect on public health. In hot climates, a continuous canopy can lower the temperature of a pavement by several degrees, which makes walking bearable and reduces the number of heat-related illnesses among elderly residents. Trees also trap dust and absorb some traffic noise, so neighbourhoods with mature trees tend to be quieter and cleaner. These benefits come at a low cost compared with the bills that overheated, polluted streets generate.

Street trees also have economic and social value. Shopping streets lined with greenery tend to attract more pedestrians, who stay longer and spend more, while residents are more likely to walk or cycle when the route is shaded and attractive. In my city, a boulevard that kept its old trees has become a popular meeting place, whereas a nearby widened street feels empty.

Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to treat trees as more important than every other demand. Growing cities genuinely need housing, public transport and space for emergency vehicles, and in some cases a tree must be removed. The sensible approach is therefore to require that every tree cut down is replaced by several new ones nearby, and to design new roads around existing trees wherever possible.

In conclusion, I strongly support making street trees a major priority, as their health, environmental and economic benefits are considerable. However, they should be protected through careful planning rather than at the expense of essential infrastructure.
