The table outlines the seven stages involved in restoring a damaged oil painting, together with the approximate length of each stage.
Overall, the process moves from investigation and cleaning to repair and finally protection, and it can take roughly three to five months in total. The removal of old varnish and the retouching of damaged areas are the most time-consuming steps, while surface cleaning is by far the quickest.
The process begins with a one- to two-week examination, in which the painting is photographed under ultraviolet light and X-rays to reveal hidden damage and earlier repairs. Next, dust and dirt are removed with soft brushes and sponges, a task requiring only two to three days. The yellowed varnish is then dissolved using solvents on cotton swabs, which can last up to six weeks.
Once the surface is clean, any tears are mended and the canvas is reinforced with a new lining, a stage lasting two to four weeks. Areas where paint is missing are filled with putty within about a week and then retouched with removable colours over two to five weeks. Finally, a protective varnish is applied and the work is fully documented.
Dạng quy trình (process): dùng bị động (is photographed, are removed, is applied) và từ nối trình tự (first / next / then / once… / finally). Overview: quy trình đi từ khảo sát → làm sạch → sửa chữa → bảo vệ; tổng thời gian khoảng 3–5 tháng; bước lâu nhất (tẩy varnish, vẽ bù) và nhanh nhất (làm sạch bề mặt). Chia 2 đoạn thân: bước 1–3 và 4–7. Lỗi hay gặp: chép nguyên câu trong bảng, quên nêu thời gian, viết overview chỉ liệt kê số bước.

Writing Task 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words.
Many old paintings and historic buildings are restored so that they look exactly as they did when they were first made. Some people say that this kind of restoration destroys their historical value.
Do the advantages of restoring old works of art and buildings outweigh the disadvantages?

Advances in science have made it possible to return faded paintings and crumbling buildings to something close to their original appearance. Critics, however, argue that such work erases the history these objects carry. In my opinion, the benefits of careful restoration clearly outweigh its drawbacks, as long as it is carried out with restraint.
The main advantage of restoration is that it allows works of art to survive at all. Paint flakes, canvas rots and stone erodes, and without intervention many masterpieces would simply disappear within a few generations. Restoration also allows the public to see a work as its creator intended. When layers of dirty varnish are removed from a painting, colours that have been hidden for centuries can reappear, often changing experts' understanding of the artist. Restored historic buildings, meanwhile, can be used again as museums, libraries or hotels, generating income that pays for their upkeep.
Nonetheless, the concerns of critics are not without foundation. Every object accumulates marks of its history, such as repairs made after a war or the wear of countless visitors, and an overly enthusiastic restorer may remove these as if they were mere damage. There is also a risk of guesswork: where original details are missing, restorers sometimes invent them, producing a version that never actually existed.
These dangers, however, can largely be avoided through responsible methods. Modern conservators generally use materials that can be removed by future experts, and they record every change in detail. Visible signs of age can also be deliberately preserved where they tell an important story.
In conclusion, while poorly judged restoration can falsify history, the alternative of allowing works of art and buildings to decay is far worse. Restoration that is cautious, reversible and well documented therefore brings more advantages than disadvantages.
Dạng Advantages outweigh disadvantages: trả lời thẳng câu hỏi ngay mở bài (lợi lớn hơn, kèm điều kiện). Thân 1 – lợi ích (giữ tác phẩm tồn tại, nhìn thấy màu gốc, tái sử dụng công trình tạo nguồn thu); Thân 2 – bất lợi (xoá dấu vết lịch sử, phục chế theo phỏng đoán); Thân 3 – vì sao bất lợi có thể hạn chế (vật liệu có thể gỡ bỏ, ghi chép đầy đủ) → củng cố kết luận. Từ vựng: carried out with restraint, intervention, upkeep, not without foundation, reversible, well documented, falsify history. Lỗi hay gặp: liệt kê lợi / hại mà không cân nhắc bên nào nặng hơn.
