As demand grows for the metals used in batteries and electronic devices, several companies are developing machines capable of collecting mineral deposits from the bottom of the ocean. Although this technology could bring certain economic and environmental benefits, I believe that, at least for now, its drawbacks are considerably more serious.
Supporters of deep-sea mining put forward two main arguments. Firstly, the metals involved, such as nickel and cobalt, are essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, so a new supply could help the world move away from fossil fuels more quickly. Secondly, mining on land often causes deforestation, water pollution and conflict with local communities, whereas the deep sea floor is far from where people live. From this perspective, shifting some extraction to the ocean might seem a lesser evil.
However, these advantages are largely speculative, while the risks are both real and potentially permanent. The deep sea is home to species that grow extremely slowly and exist nowhere else, and scientists have explored only a tiny fraction of it. Mining machines would not only destroy the sea floor in their path but also create vast clouds of sediment that could smother life over a much wider area. Because these ecosystems may take centuries to recover, any damage would effectively be irreversible. Furthermore, the ocean plays a central role in regulating the climate, and disturbing it on a large scale could undermine the very environmental goals that mining is supposed to support.
In conclusion, while deep-sea mining could provide metals needed for cleaner technology and reduce pressure on land, these potential benefits do not, in my view, justify the risk of permanently damaging ecosystems we barely understand. Governments should therefore delay large-scale mining until much more research has been carried out, and invest instead in recycling the metals already in use.
Dạng "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" phải nêu rõ bên nào nặng hơn ngay mở bài và giữ nhất quán. Dàn ý 4 đoạn: (1) Mở bài — bối cảnh + lập trường (bất lợi lớn hơn); (2) Thân 1 — lợi ích (nguồn kim loại cho xe điện / năng lượng tái tạo, giảm khai thác trên đất liền); (3) Thân 2 — bất lợi và vì sao nặng hơn (hệ sinh thái chưa hiểu rõ, phục hồi hàng thế kỷ, ảnh hưởng khí hậu); (4) Kết bài — nhắc lập trường + đề xuất (hoãn, tái chế). Từ vựng: extraction, a lesser evil, speculative, irreversible, smother, undermine, regulate the climate. Lỗi hay gặp: liệt kê lợi – hại cân bằng nhưng không trả lời bên nào lớn hơn.
