In recent years, the idea of a four-day working week has become a popular topic of discussion. Some people argue that firms should allow staff to work one day less while keeping the same salary. I partly agree with this view, because although a shorter week can bring clear benefits, it is not suitable for every type of business.

On the one hand, a four-day week can make employees healthier and more productive. When people have three days off, they have more time to rest, exercise and spend time with their families, so they return to work with more energy. As a result, they often concentrate better and make fewer mistakes. For example, a friend of mine works for a small design company that tried this system last year, and the manager said that the team finished most projects on time even with fewer working hours. In addition, this policy can help companies to attract and keep good workers, because many young people now value free time as much as money.

On the other hand, this model may cause serious problems in some industries. Hospitals, restaurants and shops need staff every day, so if each worker only works four days, the employer has to hire more people to cover the missing shifts. This would increase costs, and small businesses might not be able to afford it. Moreover, customers could be unhappy if services become slower or less available.

In conclusion, I believe that offering a four-day week without cutting pay is a good idea for office-based companies where results matter more than hours. However, it should be an option rather than a rule for all businesses, since some sectors simply cannot operate with fewer working days.
